zero waste
Driven by a desire to move away from conventional pattern-making methods and believing that the future lies in reducing waste rather than relying solely on recycling—especially since many fabrics are not compatible with the latter—Akai Ito firmly embraces the Zero Waste concept in its creations.
Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of "mottainai", which expresses the idea that nothing should go to waste, the brand develops patterns designed to minimize fabric waste and prioritizes the use of recyclable materials whenever possible.
This commitment extends beyond garment production. Inspired by the traditional Japanese craft of Temari (手まり), meaning "hand ball," we transform the small amount of textile waste generated during production into handcrafted Temari Balls. Historically, Temari were made from the remnants of old kimonos and used as children's toys before evolving into a highly respected decorative art form.
By repurposing our fabric offcuts in this way, we give new life to materials that would otherwise be discarded. Our Temari Balls can be used as decorative ornaments, gifts, Christmas tree decorations, or even children's toys—continuing a centuries-old tradition while reflecting our commitment to thoughtful and responsible design.
Crafted with care
Akai Ito focuses its craft on traditional and experimental techniques such as Japanese Sashiko embroidery, hand dyeing through Ice Dye and Shibori, among others. These processes allow us to create unique, one-of-a-kind pieces that feel organic and authentic, while remaining true to the brand's values. Through every garment, we seek to establish a personal connection with the wearer, forming the bond represented by the Akai Ito—the red thread of fate—which only grows stronger with time and wear.
This philosophy also guides our choice of materials. We primarily work with cotton and other natural fibers whenever possible, valuing their comfort, durability, and lower environmental impact. When a design requires synthetic materials, we incorporate them thoughtfully and sparingly, always with intention.
In addition, we purchase only the exact amount of fabric needed for each garment, helping us avoid unnecessary overstock and reduce material waste. By combining thoughtful material sourcing with traditional craftsmanship, we strive to create clothing that is not only distinctive but also made with care, purpose, and respect for the resources used to bring it to life.

I'm not one to ever give reviews, but I am so very happy with this purchase and the excellent costumer service from this seller that I feel that I'm obligated to! They where very communicative during the shipment process and the product arrived in perfect quality. The hakama-style pants I got are exactly as described and I do not doubt the quality of them at all. It came with a cute note and something a little extra as well ;) - all of it a testament to the company's evident care about their craft. 11/10 would absolutely recommend!!
